ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Brina Starler writes, and reads, romance novels and romantic fiction— anything with kissing will do. She lives in North Carolina with her husband, two boys, and a pup who bears a strong resemblance to Falkor the Luck Dragon, and has finally resigned herself to a future of asking tall people to get stuff off the top shelf.
Her debut novel, Anne of Manhattan, a modern day, grown-up retelling of L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, will be out in the spring of 2021 with HarperCollins.
IN THE PRESS
Adaptations of beloved children’s books are difficult to pull off, but Starler’s debut—a romantic, modern-day riff on Anne of Green Gables—brings impressive heart and sensuality to a classic.Stubborn, fiercely moral Anne Shirley is finishing the last year of her master’s in education at fictional Redmond College in Manhattan when her old nemesis, Gilbert Blythe, has the gall to roll back into town. Gil has transferred from Berkeley to help out after his father’s diagnosed with cancer. He ends up in the same program as Anne and must work with her to lead an after-school writing workshop. As Anne confronts her old prejudices against the charming, handsome Gil,Gil realizes that his teenage love for Anne still lingers. But between old fears, a competitive grad program, and a creepy thesis adviser, can these enemies-turned-lovers make it?
Starler manages to capture the original’s wholesomeness while adding a contemporary sexy edge. Unfortunately, the focus on the slow-burning relationship comes at the expense of other important characters—including menacing Dr. Lintford and Anne’s best friend, Diana Barry, whose plotlines are glossed over. Still, this is a sweet update to a classic story with an Anne Shirley fans will recognize and a Gilbert Blythe as dreamy as ever.
Reviews & Early Reader Praise
“Anne Shirley fans will be jumping for joy over Anne of Manhattan, a modern retelling of a childhood classic. And Anne and Gil are all grown up in this Romantic Comedy, my friends! L.M. Montgomery purists are going to have strong opinions, which would make this an excellent book club pick. Brina Starler's love of all things Green Gables shines through in this story where Anne has grown into an intelligent, head strong woman and smart, sexy Gil is still in love with our favorite heroine. They haven't seen each other in six years, but meet again when Gil transfers to Anne's graduate program. They get reacquainted with each other when they're forced to work together on their thesis project. This one had me aflutter in nostalgia and I loved every minute of it!” ~ Jessica Nock, Main Street Books, Davidson, NC
“A sweet story of Anne of Green Gables reimagined as a sequel in modern times. A wonderful read for grown-up fans of the beloved children's classic. It was nice to spend time with these characters as they seem true at the core to the originals and so much fun to read in a rom-com story as we see twenty something Anne find her way as a student in NYC.” ~ Melissa Summers, Main Street Books, Davidson, NC

"I enjoyed this steamy will they/won't they, enemies-to-lovers romance. Starler did an excellent job modernizing L.M. Montgomery's classic, complete with LGTQ2S+ representation and a nod to P.E.I. And the narration by Carly Robins was fantastic." ~ Red Brick House Books
